Mepis at least (I think Ubuntu as well) has important kernel boot parameters understood by some startup code in the liveCD, that are either undocumented or very well hidden documentation. The nv driver is working on that computer in Mepis 8.5. When I check the hardwade it says there is a problem with compiz. It displayed a "recovery" menu I've never seen before. You should have a slow, but working GUI. 10.04 wanted to use nouveau, but it didn't work with my hardware. The Nvidia site's driver-download section only goes far back enough to reach the 5fx series... In Windows, the second CRT on the ATI card is enabled.

The graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420. more driver information available....Jump to the Nvidia geforce4 mx 420 (nv17) pci\ven_10de&dev_0172 page. I just tried that on a computer where the Ubuntu 10.04 liveCD works correctly. Not as far as I know.

I figured that the code there likely wasn't calling for acceleration, so I figured it was worth trying to disable it.

But in Ubuntu 10.04 I don't know how to force vesa nor whether it will work.
